Considering the talk by Elder Bednar about how youth can do family history work at FamilySearch.org, you may want to know: how do I find ancestors in my family tree that are ready for temple baptism now?
The best free way is to use both Roots Magic Essentials and Legacy Standard. (For paid options, see the end of the article.)
You will need to download the following:
- Roots Magic Essentials (or Ancestral Quest Basics)
- Legacy Standard edition
- PDF Creator (or some other program that creates a PDF file by "printing", optional)
In summary, here are the steps:
- Import your 9 or 10 generation family tree from new.familysearch.org using RM or AQ
- Export to GEDCOM format
- Import into Legacy
- Use "Search" to create custom reports with our settings: LegacySettings.zip
- Print to create a PDF (or print on paper)
You may ask, why not use Legacy's family tree import? Because it doesn't obtain LDS Ordinance information until each person is checked individually. As another report alternative, Roots Magic Essentials creates a list for "LDS Ordinances" (found in the reports menu) that has an option for "missing ordinances", but generally this report is too large and unwieldy.
DETAILED STEPS
I have found that there are occasionally individuals that only have a spouse sealing and are ready for baptism. (It seems the original temple worker forgot the other spouse.) Our objective is to find individuals in this scenario so that youth can find their ancestors which are ready for baptism in new.familysearch.org without being overwhelmed on their first effort--it is much easier to search for duplicates than to search for new additions.
Step 1: Create an LDS Username
- Create an LDS username and password at ldsaccount.lds.org (which then can be used at any LDS website, such as lds.org/tools). You will need your membership record number, which is available on an "individual ordinance summary" printout from a ward clerk. It is also on your temple recommend.
- You may want to log in at new.familysearch.org (include the "new.") and view your family tree there
Step 2: Import your family tree
- Download RootsMagic Essentials, a free program: rootsmagic.com/essentials
- Click "Create a new file"

- Check the boxes for new.familysearch support

- You should see a new "familytree" icon in the tool list:

- If you don't see it, then go to "tools" then to "file options" to check the boxes in "general" and "familysearch" for LDS support and then restart the RootsMagic Program. It might be under the "file" menu called "family search central".
- Then click "import", and it is probably best to leave the default setting of importing 10 generations--that can take over 24 hours, so be sure to check your "computer sleep" options so as to not automatically shut down. (Windows users: go to Control Panel, Power Options.)
If preferred, you can use Ancestral Quest Basics, which also downloads LDS ordinance information.
Step 3: Export the file to GEDCOM format. This is found in the "File" menu.
Step 4: Import the GEDCOM file into Legacy Standard, also found in the "File" menu.
- You can leave all the default settings as they are for both the export and import. When asked about the "source", it is fine to choose "Don't Assign a Source".
Step 5: If you haven't already, download and install PDF Creator (a program that works like a printer).
- If prompted to install the yahoo toolbar (optional) you can uncheck all of the boxes, but you can donate at pdfforge.org if you want to contribute to their programmers.
Step 6: Use the Search feature in Legacy
- Click the "Search" toolbar button and go to "Detailed Search" (the 2nd tab)
- Download our recommend search settings:
- Unzip our settings and "Load" a file such as 1-DetailedSearch-MaleUnbaptizedSealed into the Search tool.
- You may also create your own custom searches with this tool, such as "endowed but not baptized",
- If desired, here is an example of a manual setting, which you can edit:
- Male LDS Bapt Date "Equal To" <blank>
- Marriage LDS Seal Sp "Not Equal To" <blank>
- Death date "Not Equal To" <blank>
- After uploading the setting with "Load", click "Create List"
- This will show the persons it found; next click "Print" at the bottom
- Next click "Load" again for the corresponding "PrinterSetup" setting.
- You will need to click "Customize" in the middle of the Printer Dialog box
- Then click "save" to save the custom view with a name
- Then close the dialog box--this should give a new column, such as "FamilySearch ID"
- Now click "Printer Setup" to choose PDF Creator (or a regular printer)
- Finally, click "Print" to create the report (or preview first).
If needed, here are detailed steps for Roots Magic and its list "LDS Ordinances" list--but it doesn't show the FamilySearch ID.
- After the Import is done, use the "Reports" Menu and select "Lists"

- Select LDS ORDINANCE LIST
- Select "Only Those Missing Ordinances" (then click "Generate Report")
- The free version allows you to "print". You will need to either print it or create a PDF as follows:
Use the free PDF Creator, which will "print" a copy into PDF.
- Then go through the list, looking for names missing the baptismal ordinance.
- Next: go back to the Family Tree icon (the Family Search Central section).
- This time, click on the "ready" link in the bottom right corner:

- Now match the name with the missing ordinance with the names in the left column.
You can double check if the baptism is really missing, and you can get the "Unique Identifier" # near the persons name:
In this case the "Unique Identifier" is MY29-FSQ.
- Next is the step to check for duplicates at new.familysearch.org or by clicking the "search for more duplicates" button in Roots Magic and by double clicking a name it suggests for in-depth analysys
- If there is no duplicate, then the next step is to click on the "LDS Ordinances" tab (or Reserve Ordinance in Roots Magic). Then click on "This individual needs temple ordinances. Click here to do them". Check the box by the name of that individual and click "continue". After finishing that section, the name will show up under the "Temple Ordinances" tab at the top. On this tab you can print a document that you bring to the temple, and the temple worker will give you the cards.
Another way that costs money (25$): www.ancestorswaiting.com
Also: www.sharingtime.com (15$ annually, but without a distinct "log in as helper" ability, blending your results with theirs).
If you have the 30$ full version of Roots Magic you can use Custom Reports, but it's not so easy.
